You’ve done the work. And still, something deeper is waiting.

Many people come to breathwork at a quiet crossroads: they’ve done the talk therapy, read the books, tried the apps — and they understand themselves well. Yet the body still runs on high alert, and a fuller aliveness feels just out of reach. That’s exactly where breath begins its work.

You are not broken, and you don’t need fixing. Beneath the tension is a self that was never lost — only covered over. Breathwork is one of the most direct ways back to it: not by thinking harder, but by letting the body finally exhale.

What is breathwork?

Breathwork is the conscious use of breathing patterns to shift your physical, emotional, and mental state. Depending on the method, it can energise you, settle a racing system, release what is stored in the body, or open expanded states of awareness — reaching places that talk and thought alone cannot.

Done well, breathwork is regulating and deep — never forced catharsis. The aim is not drama; it is a nervous system that feels safe enough to soften, and a mind that grows quiet and spacious. You do not have to think your way out of the story that keeps you tense — the body can learn to release it, layer by layer.

Why does the breath reach us so directly? Because breathing is the one function of the autonomic nervous system that you can also run consciously — a rare doorway into a system that is otherwise automatic. Slow, low breathing, and above all a long exhale, stimulates the vagus nerve and draws you towards the parasympathetic, “rest-and-digest” state; brisker, fuller breathing can rouse a flat or shut-down system in the other direction. Skilfully done, then, breathwork is not merely calming — it is regulation in both directions, restoring the natural range a system loses under chronic stress. (The full science is set out on our nervous system regulation page.)

Change your breath - change your state

Many traditions around the world know this quiet truth: when the breath is steady, the mind grows still; when the breath is ragged, the mind races - and you become emotional. The classical yoga tradition named this the link between breath (prana) and mind (chitta); modern neuroscience measures it today as the effect of breathing on the nervous system. Change the breath, and you change the state — reliably, from the inside.

The two things every breath method does

Underneath the many styles and brand names, all breathwork does one of two things — or both. It either trains your awareness of the breath (simply watching it, without changing anything) or it has you consciously direct the breath (changing its pace, depth, or rhythm on purpose). Awareness quiets the mind; conscious breathing shifts the body. Master both, and you hold the whole art in your hands.

This is why “which method is best?” is the wrong question. A racing mind often needs the structure of directed breathing to have something to hold; a tightly controlled person may need, instead, to simply watch and allow. Part of the work is learning which your system needs today — and that’s exactly what a guide is for.

What becomes possible

With regular, guided practice, people describe a steady shift — less bracing, more ease; a body that rests, and a mind that clears..

  • Release tension and emotion held in the body — trauma resolution at a safe, guided pace

  • Move out of chronic “fight or flight” into genuine calm

  • Think clearly and decide from presence instead of a racing mind

  • Raise your Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a key marker of a resilient, flexible nervous system (Laborde et al., 2022, meta-analysis)

  • Sleep more deeply and recover faster

  • Reconnect to creativity, freedom, and a sense of coming home to yourself

Whereas some of the longer breathwork sessions may lead to mystical experiences, none of these are mystical. As the breath slows and the exhale lengthens, heart rate variability rises and the stress response quietens — measurable shifts which, repeated over weeks, gradually settle into a new baseline rather than a passing calm, as stated in the study by Laborde et al., 2022.

The Doors of Breath

The Integral Breath Academy brings together several original breath methods, some thousands of years old, some modern. Some are active and energising, some slow and settling — all lead to the same place: a regulated nervous system and a quieter, more spacious mind. You are guided to the door that fits where you are today.

Ms Makkos is very competent and trustworthy. She explained her work to me clearly and guided and supported me well throughout the session. I felt very well looked after.

It was a very profound experience, both physically and emotionally. During the session, I became aware of my vulnerabilities and areas of tension. Afterwards, I felt liberated and full of energy.

I can highly recommend this work to everyone..

I can highly recommend a breathing session with Eva!

After each of the three sessions, I felt incredibly calm, centred and grounded. At the end of the first session, I literally ‘slipped into my body’. In the aftermath, I felt very calm; whilst preparing for an exam, I was amazed to realise how relaxed and calm I suddenly was, where before there had been tension and nervousness.

Eva guides you in a very pleasant, calm and friendly manner; I felt supported and, at the same time, free to find my own space.

Thank you so much, dear Eva, for your invaluable work, which truly lives up to its name and has a transformative power :).

★★★★★

It was absolutely lovely, and at the same time a bit sad, but such a lovely kind of sadness… All emotions are allowed to come and then go again.

I could really feel the points in my body and I could really sense how it, how it just flows – there’s no blockage – and it’s just, well, a sense of self-efficacy that’s somehow completely, completely free and simple.

Very special. I mean, I really hadn’t expected that at all.

Who this is for

The Breathwork and breath-based offers is for growth-minded people — often 30 to 60 — who function well on the outside and sense they’re capable of something deeper within. It is also deeply valued by people who are in processes of change and look for strength and guidance and self-empowerment.

  • You’ve done therapy or inner work, and value it — but something still feels unresolved in the body.

  • You’re wired and capable, yet rarely truly at rest.

  • You want depth and real change, not a surface-level quick fix.

  • You’re ready to meet your inner landscape with curiosity and maybe want paint a new inner landscape.

If that’s you, breathwork may be the door you’ve been looking for.

Breathwork FAQ

Is Breathwork therapeutic or only about altered states of consciousness?

No, breathwork is by no means always therapeutic. Many programmes on the market are aimed solely at achieving altered states of consciousness – unfortunately quite often without the necessary professional guidance and integration of the experience. Professional breathwork, on the other hand, is based on accredited training programmes (in accordance with GPBA guidelines) and sound clinical and therapeutic foundations. Our original protocols utilise biochemical mechanisms such as the Bohr effect or Transformational Breath not for uncontrolled catharsis, but for a sustainable, trauma-sensitive reprogramming of the nervous system and cellular resolution. It is a biological realignment involving integration and goes beyond mere self-awareness.

Can breathwork really and permanently release deep-seated emotional blockages?

Yes, professional breathwork can permanently release deep-seated emotional blockages. Unlike traditional talk therapy, breathwork takes a ‘bottom-up’ approach to the nervous system. This enables us to achieve trauma integration and resolution at a cellular level, which purely cognitive methods often cannot achieve.

How often should you practise breathwork to see real results?

The first positive effects in terms of stress reduction are usually noticeable after just the first session. However, for lasting change and genuine neuro-sovereignty, we recommend an intensive programme (3–5 sessions) or ongoing support over several months at our studios as the scientifically proven gold standard.

Is breathwork dangerous? What are the contraindications?

Breathwork is a powerful tool, as it penetrates deep into the subconscious and influences physiological processes. In the hands of a Level 5 expert, it is safe. We assess contraindications such as high blood pressure or pregnancy on a case-by-case basis, have extensive psychotherapeutic experience and adjust the intensity according to the individual’s physiological response.

The provision of breathwork is not regulated, meaning that nowadays many facilitators/instructors have only completed brief, superficial training courses, have no background in (psycho)therapy and are therefore not qualified to understand and support inner processes. The GPBA professional association sets the ethical and professional standards; reputable facilitators (including myself) are listed as members there.

Why is music (e.g. Breathe in Beats) part of the method?

In breathwork, music serves as what is known as ‘musical entrainment’. The specific rhythms and frequencies not only support the breathing pattern, but also specifically influence emotions and brain waves. This facilitates access to the subconscious and deepens the transformative process.

What is the difference between SomaBreath and Transformational Breath?

The main difference lies in the focus and on breathing patterns: SOMA Breath uses musical entrainment and breathing pauses to target biochemical performance and the activation of the ‘inner pharmacy’. Transformational Breath® (TBr) focuses on conscious connected breathing movements for living a full embodied life and facilitates trauma integration. Both complement each other perfectly on the path to stress reduction, healing and neuro-sovereignty.
